  1. Introduction

Lithium batteries may leak electricity during use, which will not only affect the performance and service life of the battery, but may also cause safety hazards. Therefore, it is of great significance to understand the causes and solutions of lithium battery leakage.

 2. Causes of lithium battery leakage

 (1) Unreasonable design

1. Improper battery size: The distance between the electrodes is too small or too large, which may cause the electrodes to be damaged by collision or long-term contact, thereby causing leakage.

2. Wrong material selection: Using inappropriate materials, such as Kapton® film, is not suitable for high-voltage lithium batteries and may cause leakage.

3. Safety design defects: If overcharge and over-discharge protection circuits are not set up, the battery may leak electricity under abnormal circumstances.

 (2) Non-compliance of manufacturing process

1. Unstable production process: Uneven hot rolling during the preparation process may cause cracking, blistering, and loosening of the electrode surface, increasing the risk of short circuits between electrodes.

2. Improper manufacturing conditions: Excessive temperature or excessive pressure may cause the internal components of the battery to deform, affect its normal operation, and even cause leakage.

3. Strict quality control: Too many impurities in the semi-finished products inside the battery or incomplete elimination of air bubbles may lead to defects in the battery, causing leakage.

 (3) Improper use environment

1. Abnormal temperature: Too high or too low temperature will cause the electrode material to expand or contract, affecting the normal performance of the battery and causing leakage.

2. Excessive humidity: A high-humidity environment may cause the electrode metal to corrode, damage the electrode, and cause leakage problems.

3. Mechanical vibration or shock: This may cause electrode collision or internal component fatigue, increasing the possibility of battery leakage.

(4) Irregular use

1. Overcharging or over-discharging: Overcharging or over-discharging will cause crystallization inside the battery, causing deformation of internal components and failure of electrode materials, thereby causing leakage.

2. Use of incompatible chargers: Using an inappropriate charger may cause the battery current to be too high or the charging voltage to be too high, causing overheating and other abnormal conditions, causing leakage.

3. Improper storage: Storing the battery in a low-voltage state, an uncharged state, or a high-temperature environment for a long time may cause the battery to self-discharge, lose charge capacity, accelerate aging, and ultimately lead to leakage.

 3. Solution

 (1) Optimized design

1. Reasonably design the battery size to ensure appropriate distance between electrodes to avoid collision and long-term contact.

2. Choose materials suitable for high-voltage lithium batteries, such as materials with high temperature resistance and good insulation properties.

3. Strengthen the safety design of the battery and set up overcharge and over-discharge protection circuits to improve the stability and safety of the battery.

 (2) Strictly control the manufacturing process

1. Stabilize the production process, ensure uniform hot rolling during the preparation process, and reduce defects on the electrode surface.

2. Optimize manufacturing conditions, control temperature and pressure within a reasonable range, and ensure the normal shape of the internal components of the battery.

3. Strengthen quality control and strictly detect impurities and bubbles in semi-finished products inside the battery to ensure the quality of the battery.

 (3) Improve the use environment

1. Try to maintain a suitable temperature and prevent the battery from working at extreme temperatures.

2. Control the humidity of the use environment to prevent electrode metal from rusting.

3. Reduce mechanical vibration and impact to the battery to avoid damage to the battery.

 (4) Standardized usage

1. Follow correct charging and discharging practices and do not overcharge or overdischarge.

2. Use a compatible charger to ensure the charging voltage and current are within the appropriate range.

3. Store the battery properly to avoid being in low voltage, uncharged or high temperature environment for a long time.

 4. Conclusion

The reasons for leakage of lithium batteries involve many aspects such as design, manufacturing, and use. In order to ensure the safety and service life of lithium batteries, users should pay attention to product brand and quality, follow correct usage methods, and pay attention to the usage environment when purchasing and using them. At the same time, manufacturers should continue to optimize design and manufacturing processes to improve battery quality and stability.
